Eighteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time
August 5, 2007
A young man, who had apparently not heard today’s warning about avoiding greed, was attending a get-acquainted Knights of Columbus membership dinner. He sat next to the oldest member of the Knights, who was also the richest man in the parish. The young man asked him how he had made his money. The older man said, “Well, it all began during the Great Depression. I was down to my last nickel. I invested that nickel in an apple. I spent the entire day polishing the apple and, at the end, sold the apple for 10 cents. The next morning, I bought two apples, spent the entire day polishing them and sold them for 20 cents. I continued this system for two weeks, and by the end of the 14th day I had accumulated over $400. Then my wife’s father died and left us two million dollars.” Preaching Resources, Dick Folger
Greed
In Luke’s gospel, Jesus offered a proverb and a parable, both of which were intended to prompt in his listeners a healthy and holy regard for material possessions. Short and pointed, the proverb speaks to the attitude that says “I am somebody because of all that I have,” or to that posture for consumerism that is never satisfied with what may be sufficient but always “needs” the biggest, the best, the fastest, the costliest, the handiest, the latest innovation in order to fit or even to feel “a cut above the rest.” You are not what you have, says Jesus, and if you choose to live your life as if you were, you are in for a crisis of identity.
Jesus’ parable of the fool with his ever expanding appetite for acquisition and for bigger and bigger storage bins finds an echo in one told by contemporary story-teller William J. Bausch (A World of Stories, Twenty-third Publications, Mystic Conn.: 1998). Once there lived a man (or woman) that dreamed of nothing but gold. Obsessed with possessing gold, he thought of little else. One day, he left his desk and ran to the marketplace. He ran through the crowd to the stall where a man was selling gold coins. Quickly, he scooped up all the coins into his bag and ran away. An officer who had been standing right next to the table nabbed him and hauled him off in handcuffs to the precinct. As he put the man in a cell, he said, “I can’t understand it. There you were, and me right next to the merchant’s table and at least a hundred witnesses and you stole something right in front of us all.” The man replied, “I never saw any one. I only saw the gold.”

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDS IN OUR HOMES
We have the cleanest sewers in the world. More than 4.8 billion gallons of water are literally flushed down American toilets each year—that is 9,000 gallons of water per person per year. Think before you flush. Look at purchasing a high-efficiency toilet (HET) and save on your water bill and help save our most precious resource. Toilet leaking?...FIX IT...it wastes up to 200 gallons of water every day. Love the Lord by loving his creation.
Diocesan Wedding Anniversary Liturgy
This annual event has been scheduled for Oct. 7, at the 1l:00 am Mass at the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Cathedral in Biloxi. The anniversaries to be recognized start at 20 years of marriage and advance in 5-year increments. Registration forms are available in the vestibule of the church and the Parish Office.

Justice Action Opportunity
The Catholic Campaign for Immigration works in support of justice for immigrants in accordance with Church teaching. The Dream Act (H.R.1585) would provide a path to permanent residence for young women and men brought to our country as undocumented children. If, they graduate from High School and enter college or the military. This would help tens of thousands of minors who otherwise would have no future for themselves in America. Our. U.S. Catholic bishops have long advocated for legal status for minors who entered our country as undocumented infants and children.
To support this legislation and learn more, contact your senator at 202-224-3121. ASAP
Youth Faith Formation
Mark your calendars! Registration for the upcoming 2007-2008 YFF (Sunday School) year will take place in the vestibule of the church after all Masses, the weekend of Aug. 18-19. Weekly sessions will begin on Sun., Sept. 16
YFF Volunteers Needed
Have you felt the call? If you have, please consider volunteering as a catechist for Youth Faith Formation. We are in need of Lead Catechists for the Pre-K and 3rd Grade. Assistants and substitutes are also in great need. Call Jean Beckett in the Parish Office (601-583-9404) for more details on this special ministry.
The flowers placed in front of the altar of sacrifice this weekend were donated by Bill Kinkopf in loving memory of Germaine Kinkopf.
As we move forward with our Sacred Heart School project, you may see modulars in the parking lot. This is only a temporary measure until the modulars are set in place. Please pardon our dust as we grow.
