Second Sunday of
Ordinary Time
January 20, 2008
If
youÕre old enough to have heard it, you wonÕt ever forget the deep,
authoritative voice of Walter Cronkite, anchor of the ÒCBS Evening News,Ó
during the 1960s and 1970s. Because of his journalistic integrity, Cronkite was
described as the most trusted man in America. He would end his broadcasts with
the phrase Òand thatÕs the way it is.Ó And for America, there was no question
that this was the truth.
John
the Baptist was like a news anchor of his time. This herald announced the
coming of Jesus. After JesusÕ baptism, John continued to announce him,
declaring him to be the Son of God.
If
Walter Cronkite had been around in those days, he could most rightly have
underscored JohnÕs declaration by saying, ÒAnd thatÕs the way it is!Ó
