Tenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

June 8, 2008

More than 2.3 million people in the United States are incarcerated. That is an astonishing 1 out of every 100 adults. Worldwide, there are more than 9 million people living behind bars.  This vast population is not forgotten by the Church, and ministering to it recalls JesusÕ teaching in todayÕs Gospel.

Kairos prison ministry has been called the best example of the early Church in existence today. Perhaps prisoners are todayÕs equivalent of what the Pharisees called Òtax collectors and sinners.Ó Jesus ministered to them because he said he came to call sinners and bring mercy.

Kairos is an ancient Greek word for the Òright or opportune moment.Ó More than 20,000 volunteers present the program, which brings teams of men and women from the communities surrounding an institution to present a short course in Christianity over a three-day weekend. We may not be called to prison ministry, but we all can reach out to the Òtax collectors and sinnersÓ of our time.                                                                                                            (Deacon Dick Folger, Celebration)

Green Space — a little air, please

Your air-conditioner will work more efficiently if you keep it clean. Change disposable filters monthly; a better bet is a reusable filter, which should be checked monthly and washed in the sink or outside if itÕs clogging up. Also, vacuum the vents and registers to promote good airflow.

The flowers in front of the altar of sacrifice were placed by Sharon Bell in loving memory of  Rebecca Bell.

If you have a key to the church facilities, and have not obtained the new security code, call 601.583.9404  before meeting in the church or    parish office.

Fr. Ken and the community of Sacred Heart Parish wish to extend their deepest sympathy to Pat and Laurie Skrmetti and their family on the death of PatÕs brother, Thomas Skrmetti.  May he rest in Eternal Glory and his loved ones receive GodÕs consolation and peace.

                   Sacred Heart Parish Pastoral Council

Congratulations to Larry Bellipanni, Sally Hughes and Beth Taylor on their election to the Pastoral Council. We appreciate the commitment of these individuals who will serve a 3-year term as Council members charged to Òhelp in fostering pastoral activity.Ó Thank you also to our other nominees: Dennis Conklin, Josh Hyde, Kristy Jones and Mary Smith, for their willingness to have their names placed on the ballot. We were truly blessed to have seven fine candidates. Our parish is surely a winner by having people such as these willing to serve. Last but not least, thank you to the faithful service of Sandy Kinnan, Lynn Landrum, and Kelly Oliver who will be rotating off the council this year.

Thank you for all the prayers for Jim French. GodÕs healing hand has touched him and JimÕs cancer is in remission.
